In the past 6 months, my bank (RBC) has contacted me three times, canceling my card 3 times, because of what they considered potentially fraudulent activity. The first two times, they were unable to point to activity which was not due to me, but they canceled the card anyway, issuing a new one, and requiring a new PIN. The third time, however, someone attempted to withdraw $500 using my card at a store's ATM, in CSL.

I'm:
* cutting back on my INTERAC use, using INTERAC only when absolutely necessary,
* withdrawing cash and using that,
* never handing my card over to someone else (swiping it myself, to avoid the under-counter swipe),
* and covering my hand completely as I type in the PIN (so that even *I* cannot see it).
* Also, I found out I can change the PIN at any RBC ATM, and will do so, frequently.

I too had my card duplicated and my account wiped out. The bank caught the transactions based on unusual behavior and called me. I am not sure where it happened, but believe it was somewhere downtown. It is important to be very diligent in checking your statements for sure.

I had my card cloned and still have no idea where or when. My bank called me within hours of me making purchases on my debit card one afternoon, as they saw deposits and withdrawls happening at the EXACT same time completely across the island. All was resolved in a few days, thankfully!

My girlfriend was nailed by one a year ago when she lived on the west island. No idea if it's the same scam.

Banks go to great lengths to enact security on websites but aren't doing a whole lot in regards to debit cards. I guess the CBA shows that it's still cheaper to pay out and take a slight credibility hit then to implement something more secure.
