Inevitable

Has this not been the most gorgeous couple of October days you’ve ever seen? For me it has. Downtown yesterday was like the first warm day of spring with everyone outside “taking sun”. I don’t think I’ve ever worn just a tshirt this late in the season. So imagine my disappointment this morning when I checked the long range forecast. Sigh. It’s all over but the crying.

Downtown was rampant with the fugglies’last-ditch
    effort before the big bundle-up.

Except for the few nice days we get, I am miserable during the October through early April period. People tell me it’s seasonal affective disorder and recommend those special lights, but my problem isn’t the lack of light. I am miserable because I can’t get any exercise and have no transportation. My only tranportation is a bicycle. The cold also makes me feel generally unmotivated and the sharp winds we get feel like knives being hurled at me.

I spend most of the winter and the wet days in the fall, spring and summer lying in bed. I refuse to get up. Countless people suggest activities like reading, TV, joining clubs and the usual pastimes others enjoy, but the developmental disorder I was born with left me without the cognitive and other skills needed to pursue these activities (that’s a story in itself). Others tell me to talk to my doctor about antidepressants, but none of them agree with me. They make me sick.

The only solution is relocation to a warm, dry climate, but I can’t afford that.
