Heavenly skies

This week, we’ve had some amazing sunsets. May%20055sm.jpgLots of pinks and purples and a couple days ago, we had a “sun pillar”! This is a rather rare phenomenon (if you google it, you can see some wild pictures) that occurs when the light passes through flat octagonally shaped ice crystals all tilted in the same direction. In the photo, the sun has already set and is below the horizon. If you don’t like the scientific explanation, then maybe that was a sign from the Gods that they’ve finally turned on the heat around here, lol.

Imagine if it was our mountain that was burning

Lots of great first hand reports (and pictures) of the LA Griffith Park fire on Blogging.la and Boing Boing.

Transit Strike Announced for May 22

Damnit. STM maintenance workers voted to strike as of May 22nd. I’ve blogged about this before and I find it totally unacceptable. Is there any way that we, the people, the riders, the affected, can rally to pressure these guys not to go through with a strike? Do we have no say in this matter? What am I supposed to do? Spend an hour walking to work? Spend money on a taxi when I’ve already spent my $65 for a bus pass? I am so fed up with this. Every few years, I have to put up with this crap. I have enough stress in my life and this just makes me insanely mad.

The National Women’s Show

After a very stressful week, it was so nice to go and do something fun. This weekend, The National Women’s Show is once again taking place at the Palais des Congrès. I went with one of my girlfriends after work last night and of course, we also bumped into other friends at the show. The entrance fee is $12 but the show has been advertised quite extensively in the local papers and there’s a 2-for-1 coupon that you can cut out. If you don’t have the coupon, don’t worry because there’s bound to be people in line with extra copies. Unfortunately, my friend and I arrived rather late in the day so we didn’t get the complimentary gift bag at the door but the entire event is packed with exhibitors handing out samples of all kinds so it’s truly impossible to leave empty handed. There really is something for everyone at this show. Sure, it’s mass consumerism and all marketing but women are pretty savvy shoppers and we know we’re being pitched to. If you love to shop, it’s a great place to just browse and see what’s new and exciting out there. Plus, I won’t say no to a freebie.

The food section has got to be the most popular section. At times, it is jam packed. I do not recommend bringing children in strollers. Leave the kid at home with daddy for everyone’s sake. Sometimes, you just can’t move in the crush of women hovering around the food samples. You definitely do not have to fear going hungry at the show. There are so many different samples of food to try that you’ll feel like you’ve eaten a full meal. The only thing is, you end up eating so many different combinations of flavors of food all at the same time. But hey, as they say, it all goes to the same place. You name it, I ate it. My faves: the mini tequila rose shooters in chocolate cups, the vegetarian chicken nuggets, pasta, tofu, probiotic cheese, and flavored coffees. A couple of rounds up and down the aisles and you will be stuffed. I also hauled a lot of samples home in my bag. Stuff like containers of yogourt, cottage cheese, more cheese, chocolate bars, candy, juice, tea, granola bars, soup mix, and the list goes on. It’s like halloween for grown women.

Nice editorial in today’s Gazette

Howdy!

303 days ago I wrote a post about the cameras on Saint Laurent. Well they are now ‘live’ and as a consequence the Gazette has written an editorial against them being used. My guess is that the Gazette editorial is going to be as effective as my original post.

If you are interested in making your opinions known, these are the people in charge who can do something about it:
Gordon Bernstein, President of the SDC Saint Laurent, (514) 286-1021.
Marco Carrier, commander of Police Station 38, (514) 280-0119.
Madame Helen Fotopulos, Mairesse of Le Plateau, (514) 872-9530
Richard Bergeron, city councilor (514) 868-5193.
Isabel Dos Santos, city councilor (514) 868-5195.
Madame Josee Duplessis, city councilor (514) 868-5196.
Madame Eleni Fakotakis, city councilor (514) 868-5192.
Michel Labrecque, city councilor (514) 868-5191.

Best of Montreal Suggestions

Howdy!

header2.jpg

As some of you might know there is an annual popularity contest run by the Montreal Mirror, called The Best of Montreal. Since you need to have a minimum of 25 entries for your ballot to count, I figured I might make some suggestions in some categories so as to help people fill it out.

For the record, I have deliberately left the Best Blog category blank, because I am fairly certain that everyone who reads this has an opinion. Also, in case you didn’t know, I run Zeke’s Gallery, and the three artists that I suggested for best art exhibit all had their exhibits here, and a bunch of the musians have played here as well. Lisa Hunter (best author auggestion) is a Metroblogger as well.

And if you do fill out a ballot, the format for the telephone number is xxx-xxx-xxxx, all hypens, no parenthesis.

Kooza!

Where can you see a guy twirl a girl around his head while riding a unicycle? Or how about a juggler juggling 7 hoops while bouncing a ball on his forehead? How about a tightrope act involving 3 guys, 2 bicycles, and a chair, all stacked up pyramid style, and all done without safety nets or cables? These were a few of the amazing feats we witnessed at the Cirque du Soleil last night. It was an incredible performance and included a lot of humor, reminding me of the earlier incarnations of the show. But the most amazing “act” involved 3 girls on the floor. I swear they had spines made of rubber. How else to explaing their ability to lie on the floor, face down, and flip their body and legs up and over their heads so that their legs were completely horizontal with the floor. My back only bends one way – forward, but these girls seemed to do the impossible and fold their back – backward. Then they stacked themselves on top of each other in this position so they looked like a triple decker sandwich. Really bizarre! They had another amazing act that I can’t properly describe. It was like two gerbil wheels attached to either end of a pole that pivoted around vertically like some carnival thrill ride. And then the gymnasts got on this spinning contraption and did their thing. Breathtaking and heartstopping. If you ever get a chance, go see the new show Kooza, it’s well worth the ticket price. (Though I’d eat before going, a hotdog and a beer will set you back 12 bucks!)

Yulblog Tonight

Don’t forget that today is the first Wednesday of May which means that members of the Yulblogosphere will be meeting at the usual place and at the usual time.

I have yet to decide on the question of the month so suggestions are more than welcome.
