The National Women’s Show

After a very stressful week, it was so nice to go and do something fun. This weekend, The National Women’s Show is once again taking place at the Palais des Congrès. I went with one of my girlfriends after work last night and of course, we also bumped into other friends at the show. The entrance fee is $12 but the show has been advertised quite extensively in the local papers and there’s a 2-for-1 coupon that you can cut out. If you don’t have the coupon, don’t worry because there’s bound to be people in line with extra copies. Unfortunately, my friend and I arrived rather late in the day so we didn’t get the complimentary gift bag at the door but the entire event is packed with exhibitors handing out samples of all kinds so it’s truly impossible to leave empty handed. There really is something for everyone at this show. Sure, it’s mass consumerism and all marketing but women are pretty savvy shoppers and we know we’re being pitched to. If you love to shop, it’s a great place to just browse and see what’s new and exciting out there. Plus, I won’t say no to a freebie.

The food section has got to be the most popular section. At times, it is jam packed. I do not recommend bringing children in strollers. Leave the kid at home with daddy for everyone’s sake. Sometimes, you just can’t move in the crush of women hovering around the food samples. You definitely do not have to fear going hungry at the show. There are so many different samples of food to try that you’ll feel like you’ve eaten a full meal. The only thing is, you end up eating so many different combinations of flavors of food all at the same time. But hey, as they say, it all goes to the same place. You name it, I ate it. My faves: the mini tequila rose shooters in chocolate cups, the vegetarian chicken nuggets, pasta, tofu, probiotic cheese, and flavored coffees. A couple of rounds up and down the aisles and you will be stuffed. I also hauled a lot of samples home in my bag. Stuff like containers of yogourt, cottage cheese, more cheese, chocolate bars, candy, juice, tea, granola bars, soup mix, and the list goes on. It’s like halloween for grown women.

Aside from the food section, there are also health and beauty and lifestyle products on display. Here too, samples abound. I picked up some cream and lotion samples, a free nylon bag, some toiletry items, shampoo samples, etc. I bet if I’d gone earlier in the day, I would have scored even more. The friends who we bumped into all started in the afternoon. They had bags bursting at the seams full of stuff. Next year, I’m booking a vacation day.

I did buy a few things at the show but luckily it was only very minor damage to the wallet. For instance, there was a really good deal on bread so I got some Omega-3 bagels, walnut bread, and golden flax seed bread to take home. It’s a good idea to wait until you’re ready to leave before you buy stuff because otherwise, you’ll have to lug your purchases around and the place is pretty huge. The exhibitors load you down with so much free stuff that you end up walking around with pounds of stuff in your bag. If you get tired, go to the booth where they have the massage chairs and get a free massage.

The show is still running tomorrow on Sunday May 6th from 10-5.

It was great fun! But, it was soo crowded that I felt the exhibtion hall had went over its capacity. People were pushing and shoving in some areas. It felt unsafe. It appeared that the aisles were narrow for two-way traffic, insufficient garbage bins, messy aisles…
