And yet it hasn’t been that cold
Before I bought a block heater for my car two winters ago, I had noticed that the temperature at which it would not start was -26°C. Ever since, I’ve had the tendency to remember how many times the temperature dropped below that threshold. Needless to say, the block heater has not really been needed this year.
Although the cold temperatures of the past week could lead us to believe that winter is trying to make amends for the extra long November, the official statistics at Trudeau Airport show that the first week of February has actually been warmer than normal by half a degree. The effect is more pronounced during the night since the average low has been 1.1 degree higher than normal.
For the season, we are running at 3.7 degrees above normal. Something tells me we’re going to have a lot of bugs come Spring.

Maybe not that cold but it’s still arctic and it wont go away.
It’s been such a short period of cold that it’s not even dented my tolerance for it. Bring it on, and make colder!
It’s always amusing in November or early December when the announcers on the radio talk of “it’s really cold out there”. It isn’t, but once they start fussing, it doesn’t leave much for the really cold weather.
The only reason it’s “cold” now is that we’ve had it relatively warm. We got through January with a handful of days that were were under -10C around
noon. That took care of one of the two cold months. We have three more weeks of February, which really makes it manageable, no matter how cold. And it’s only six more weeks until spring
officially arrives. We can practically do that standing on our heads.
Daylight Savings Time kicks in on March 11, a tad over a month away. Two months from now, we’ll be checking for garage sales.
