Save Westmount Park

With all of the hoopla, protests and news going on about renaming Parc Avenue to Robert Bourassa Avenue, the fact that another park with a potential problem came to my attention.

Westmount Park has been around since 1899 and there is now the possibility of a large section being redone in AstroTurf.

Enter Save The Park! Sauvons le parc!:

Save The Park! Sauvons le parc! is a citizens’ group formed to protect the integrity of Westmount Park which is endangered by The City of Westmount’s proposed replacement of grassland by artificial turf in the whole southern section of the park.

There’s a bit more info, a contact link and a petition available at their website, savewestmountpark.com.

Wait a minute. The park is not in danger. The talk is of some of it being turned to Astroturf.

But that area is used for organized football, both kinds, and my memory is that the area is pretty barren of grass most of the time.

Once that’s happening, much of the time such areas aren’t useable for much else. EIther it’s muddy from the use, or off limits while they try to fix it. Every summer at McGill much of the grassy area on the campus is off limits while they seed and try to get the grass to come back.

A bigger issue would seem to be whether they will enclose the space, or not. That was the argument, was it twenty years ago?, when Astroturf was put in at Jeanne Mance park. The neighborhood was rightly concerend about the fence that would enclose it, which led to the campaign back then agaiunst the Astroturf.

I’ve not seen anything about what will happen at Westmount Park. An enclosure would get in the way, and is a far bigger thing to be concerened about than Astroturf itself.

This is not some wilderness enclave. It’s a park that sees its share of manicures, and sees a large amount of abuse from the football and soccer played there. Astroturf may in fact make it look far greener than the real grass that is worn away from the play.

Might as well argue that the soccer and football not be played there, since it wrecks the grass.

    Michael

I’m not really arguing for either direction. I’m personally quite indifferent, actually.

I’ve now edited the post a bit in order to not mislead anyone. I’ll admit that I wrote it in a bit of a rush before heading out to a meeting, it didn’t make much sense.

how did i become such a municipal issue dork? anyway: westmount park’s sports field is chronically overused. it gets all chewed up. the new field turf stuff (at molson stadium, for instance) is actually great to play on. nothing like astroturf. I play rugby (at westmount), and have played on field turf. it sure ain’t nice plush grass, but then westmount field rarely has any of that anyway (this yr was ok cause of the rain).

so if you support sorts in Montreal, you should be for getting lots of this stuff installed – much better for those who want to play.
