I Hate To Do This…
… But I feel the need to point out yet another sign that summer has ended.
Last week I brought up that summer was over by posting a picture of geese flying South. But there’s one other sign that I always look for when determining how much longer I can still wear shorts and a t-shirt;
When folks around town start emptying their swimming pools.
It’s a surefire sign that there won’t be anymore frolicking by the poolside, there will be fewer and fewer BBQ feasts and people will give weird looks to someone wearing nothing else but a pair of cargo shorts and a short sleeved t-shirt at 7:30 in the morning when everyone else has an autumn jacket on or even sporting a scarf.
I’m not complaining, I actually quite like this time of year. But I’ll certainly miss the longer days and wearing shorts (which I start to wear as early as the end of March). I do, however, occasionally fire up the BBQ mid-winter on a mild day. What about any of you fine readers, anyone else brave the cold and risk lighting you mittens on fire while standing in front of the BBQ?

I try to hold out and wear sandals for as long as possible. But as for those who wear shorts and t-shirts, I don’t know how they do it. There actually is a guy who wears shorts all year round. I’ve seen him in the winter walking around with a parka and shorts. I think he’s been profiled in one of the papers. Now, that, is nuts.
I can’t say that I’ve ever BBQ’d during the winter. I have, however, hung out by a campfire all evening, warming my hands over it. There’s nothing really weird about that, though, besides the fact that I (and all of my companions) was dressed like a Viking.
SCA event and all, don’tcha know. :)
I’m with you, love this time of year.Can walk around at night without being eaten alive by bugs. The BBQ is used year round here. Nothing like a cold winter BBQ while the snow is falling.
I once went to fill up my BBQ tank at the local Rona in October and the guy who filled it said something like “..it’s a shame you’ll only be able to use it a few times before the snow falls”. When I told him I BBQ during the winter he was all surprised.
I had thought, being Montrealers, we all BBQ a few times over the cold months. I guess I was wrong.
I wear shorts for as long as I can. It’s pretty easy when 90% of my day is spent indoors, underground. I have a relatively short walk to the Metro in the morning and once inside, I don’t need to go back outside until I head home (but I do go out as much as possible for some air). The Underground is a Godsend for Montreal winters, although they are much milder lately.
