Lighter winter in Montreal
Montrealers can look forward to a milder winter this year. At least that’s what they discussed on the news last night; sometimes I think weather forecasts are possibly done by throwing a dart and making a few good guesses, but studies are showing that once again the winter will be a little easier to deal with. The news blurb mentioned that it will include less precipitation as well, so I assume no giant snowbanks to plow through.
For people who hate winter and the cold, it sounds like good news, but of course the drawback to that is that our gentle winter comes at the hands of global warming so it’s a nasty trade-off. I can’t stand extremes – super humidity in the summer and bitter cold in the winter make me want to scream – but I’d rather have a winter of my childhood if it meant the planet wasn’t slowly heating up.

I don’t think that the milder winter is necessarily caused by global warming, and it’s a shame that every activist or quasi-activist is jumping on that bandwagon.
The milder winter could be caused by many other geo-global or localized events, and it’s really annoying to see all reporters blindly point the finger at “the big problem of global warming.”
First, read this:
“Global Warming Not Responsible for 1998’s Unusual Weather”: http://www.nationalcenter.org/NPA228.html
Then, read this:
“NOAA ISSUES UNSCHEDULED EL NINO ADVISORY” (Sept 13, 2006): http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2006/s2699.htm
Now, considering the above fact-driven articles, why do people assume that “global warming” is more likely a cause for the anticipated warmer winter climate than El Nino?
We were discussing this yesterday during lunch and we said something horrible: “There might not be snow this year.”
Of course, the chances of that happening is like winning the lottery. But still, it’s a horrible thought… we all ski and do other stuff in the snow… white snow, not the other snow.
EC says a warm winter ?
WAHOO! That means we’ll be buried in the stuff.. skiing will be Fab!
Seriously, their track record for long term predictions is about as good as Jojo Savard.
Actually it wasn’t a reporter, it was the weather specialist they were interviewing that brought up global warming, mentioning that the temperature has been increasing.
