Citizenship on ice
Alex is studying for his citizenship exam, and the questions seem straight-forward enough — name the capital of Canada and of your province, etc.
I wonder, though, if these questions are the ones we REALLY need to know to be able to live here. To fully assimilate, it would also be useful to know things like why the Canadiens are called the Habs. (Why?) In fact, a full history of hockey may be more relevant to fitting in than knowing what the Governor General does all day. Thank goodness for the upcoming mini-series on the history of the game!
I’m just hoping the government doesn’t institute a skating requirement before it’s my turn to take the test.

I agree.. The questions should be entirely around hockey. My girlfriend will soon be studying for her test. I told her the only number she needs to remember is 24.. As in how many Stanley Cups did the Habs win?
Also, she needs to remember one date: 1967. Why ? ‘Cause that was the last time those losers in Toronna won the cup. Suckas!
Oh and Habs comes from ‘Les Habitants’. The nickname might be a historical mistake (as in ‘indians’ for “First Nations”) since some thought the “H” in “CH” is Habitants..
No, no, everyone knows exactly what the “CH” stands for, “Centre Hice”!!
My wife keeps telling me that I will need a maple syrup/blood transfusion before becoming a citizen.
I worried about the test, and then it was the easiest thing imaginable. The most important part is about voter’s rights and responsibilities. You must know how to vote.
