Much safer!

So with it being the five-year “anniversary” (such a happy word for a tragedy) of 9/11, every news channel seems to be asking “is it safer now?”

I’d say, “not really!” Not when a Journal de Montreal reporter was able to access prohibited areas on seven occasions at Trudeau airport. He crawled under a fence, used employee doors, walked out on the tarmac, and touched planes.

I find this incredibly disturbing. They can keep people from boarding with hair gel and nail clippers, they can throw people off flights for praying in a language they don’t understand, but meanwhile, Joe Schmoe can traipse around just because he - according to sources - just looked like he belonged. That? That is frightening.

Ya.. don’t forget that Le Journal de Mtl was also the paper that found a half cocked scientist who declared most of montreal’s pools to be unsafe and a few of them to be massive cesspools of dangerous bacteria!

The problem I have with these types of stories is security is one of those types of whacka-mole stories. Reminds me in the IT business of security experts who claim your PC is “unsafe”. Even a computer that is buried 1000 meters in concrete and turned off can be considered unsafe.

If we went spent 10% of our time looking as to what motivates people to commit terrorist attacks instead of writing them off as nutters and spending all our time on how to create bigger and better security systems, we’d be a lot better off.
