A fair and just traffic jam
Very interesting article in La Presse the other day.
The argument being that traffic is not fair. In a traffic jam one may find a Jetta with four passengers and next to this car is a single person driving a large Chrysler with the air conditioning running. The first car is doing what they can for the environment. Yet this car must sit in traffic right along side the car with one passenger. Same applies for a city bus. The argument continues that we need to change the way in which society works. We as citizens will only really change our ways if it hits us in the pocket book or is uncomfortable.
The article suggests that tolls be set up and preference be given to buses and those car pooling.. all over the city. If one wishes to drive into work alone, they must pay for it, in terms of money and time.
According to the article, 2 million people in the Montreal area commute every day. 1.3 million do so via their cars. Of those 1.3 million cars, four out of 5 have only one occupant. That’s insane!
Given that, I say toll ‘em. Toll ‘em and make ‘em sit in traffic so that those who do car pool, or better yet, take public transit or *gasp* ride their bikes have preference.
A fair and just circulation.
