Do people eat fish caught from the St Lawrence?

aug%2016%20003.jpgThere are always people fishing on the spit of land opposite the old port. I can’t help but wonder what they plan to do with the fish if they catch any. Admittedly, they are slightly upstream from the port, but I can’t help but question the pollution levels upstream. Even at Parc Bellerive, there are people fishing, and this is downstream from all the port industry.

If the river is clean and the fish are healthy, I would be willing to try to catch dinner too. Hey, who doesn’t like a little barbeque trout in the summer? Cheap and fun at the same time. But since fish filter the water through the gills, we often find higher levels of pollutants in their body than we might expect by just testing the river’s water.

Safe or not safe? Fish from the St Lawrence River.

I work in the Old Port and see people fishing all the time. And all I’ve seen it catch and release.

It’s also very popular around the Lachine Lighthouse and the Rapids Park.
