U.S. hipster strike enters third week

Last month, The Onion reported that U.S. hipsters — tired of being uncompensated for their trend-setting fashions — were going on strike. No longer would they wear indie band T-shirts, grow goatees, and sip chai (now that lattes have become bourgeois). Teenagers in malls across America lamented that they would no longer know how to dress, talk or choose music to download illegally.

Not to worry. Once again, Montreal steps into the void. Most of the cool music in North America comes from here anyway. Even the provincial New York Times said so.

Which Montreal bands are your favorites? Which do you think are most poised for international success?

My new local favorite is a band lead by a friend’s cousin, Beau Kavanagh, called The Broken Hearted. I’ve seen them play a couple of times now, most recently just this past Friday at Brutopia. They seriously rocked the house (pardon the cliché).

They’re playing next on August, 20 at The academy club - 4445 St. Laurent (Benefit show for The Generations Foundation 10$ a ticket/ 12$ at the door - includes 2 other bands). And then they’re off to The Global Battle of the Bands semi-finals on August, 26 in Blythe, Ontario.

They also have 3 independent albums available at HMV. So yeah… I think they’re well on their way to bigger things.
