How can Yahoo, Google and Mapquest make the same typo?

Whenever I invite people over, I always have to tell them not to use internet maps. According to the street sign, the phone book and Canada Post I live on Place du Buisson in Pierrefonds. Unfortunately Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps and Mapquest have it spelled as Place du Brisson (you’ll have to search yourself for the last two since direct linking doesn’t seem to work).

Three of the biggest players on internet mapping obviously got their erroneous information from the same source. If I knew who it was, I might be able to point out their mistake but that is obviously not the kind of information that they want us to have. There is an old saying that goes “If it’s on TV, then it must be true”, except of course that the internet is rapidly replacing television…and the local library. It might be simpler for me to simply accept the inevitable and to send out a bunch of change of address cards.

It’s not that hard to find out where Google Maps gets their information from, it’s right on their homepage. It’s from a company called NavTeq.

But My guess is that they get the streetnames from the city of Pierrefonds (or the province of Quebec), and that the error has been made there.

    Hi Andre,

You can report the error to MapQuest at:
    http://help.mapquest.com/jive/mqdataerror.jspa

FYI - you can normally tell who the underlying data provider is for a map by checking the copyrights or logos, normally found in the bottom right-hand corner of the map.

Good suggestions, I didn’t think about the copyright notice. I remembered Mapquest at the last minute and I had to leave for work so I didn’t take the time to go over their web page too carefully.

Since they have the best system, I’ll send them the correction and I’ll see if it “propagates” to the other sites ;-)
