The Calm After the Storm

After the heat, humidity, and rain storms of the last few days, we finally had a perfect summer day today. It was warm and sunny and dare I say, even chilly in the shade! I spent part of the day at Beaver Lake on Mount Royal. It was a typical weekend in the park. Families with cute babies and a couple of brats thrown in for good measure… Couples strolling, sunbathing, some in need of renting a room… Bbq’s smoking, ducks quacking, frisbees tossing…

I’m glad to report that the ducks in the “lake” are doing fine. A greedy bunch they are. I was watching them as people tossed in bread. Those ducks will come almost right up to you if they know you have goodies for them. And they’ll peck off other ducks that get in the way. Little buggers.
I was surprised to see how many goldfish there were too. They appear to live in harmony with the ducks but if I was a goldfish, I don’t know how happy I’d be living in that murky water.
And there’s something about seeing a policeman on a horse that brings out the kid in me. It’s so cool and the horseys are so cute!
Although I’ve yet to see any cop on horseback actually chase down an actual criminal… That would be a sight. For starters though, they could ticket the cyclists who insist on speeding down the mountain like torpedos. So speaking of which, here is my rant of the day: I can’t stand being passed from behind by crazy cyclists who don’t respect the speed limit on the pedestrian path. As a runner, I’ve already experienced being cut off by a speeding cyclist rounding a corner who forced me onto a patch of ice, nearly making me slip and break my neck. Another time, a cyclist let their dog run loose while he went on ahead and the dog ran right into my leg, causing a huge aching bruise right before a race. In neither case did I ever get an apology or any assistance since the rider was long gone by the time the damage was done. Inconsiderate riders are a menace to people who walk on the path. All I can say is, what comes around goes around. When the gods of open car doors decide to unleash their fury, look out… or NOT!…
Aside from that, ahhh what a lovely day!
