Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal

Our friend David called to ask if Alex and I like ballet. I told him sure — I love it, Alex hates it, so on average as a couple, we like it. So David and I went to see the Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal at the Théâtre de Verdure in La Fontaine Park, while Alex declined (reminding me that last time we saw a contemporary performance, the music sounded like cats being strangled.)

If you like contemporary dance — especially FREE contemporary dance under the stars– don’t miss this show. It runs through Sunday.

The first piece on the program is an angsty, gravity-defying dance about sexual alienation (I think — correct me if I’m wrong.) The second is a hilariously frothy divertissement set to Mozart. The male dancers wear powdered wigs — or enormous drag-queen ballgowns — and yank the female dancers around by their long skirts. The physical comedy is reminiscent of a Pierrot/Pierrette marionette show. Even Alex would have loved it.

Waiting in line for the show, I bumped into Zeke, so now it’s a race to see who gets to blog about it first…
