Bon Cop Bad Cop premiere
Monday night my husband, Alex, and I went to the premiere of Bon Cop Bad Cop, the bilingual buddy cop movie you see posters for in every Metro station. (Alex was one of the writers, so we had free tickets.)
Bon Cop Bad Cop, directed by Montreal’s own Eric Canuel, is ostensibly a buddy-cop movie like Lethal Weapon, but with a Canadian twist. The straigh-laced, by-the-book cop is from Toronto. The wildcard cop is Quebecois. They get stuck working together when a dead body is found draped over the Welcome to Quebec/Welcome to Ontario sign at the border. Who knew the two solitudes could mix so hilariously?
Colm Feore — yes, the Serious actor who plays Trudeau in miniseries and Shakespearian roles in Stratford — is hilarious as the stuffed shirt who inadvertently gets stoned when a house full of illicit pot plants is set afire. The Montreal cop, Patrick Huard (who actually had the original idea for the movie), milks every gag for maximum laughs, especially when his new Ontario girlfriend asks her to teach her some dirty French words to say in bed. Cut to a writhing, naked blonde moaning “Vive le Quebec libre.”
Although the film is billed as bilingual and will be shown in ROC (rest of Canada) with subtitles for the French, the version we saw had no subtitles for the French. I missed some of the jokes but learned a few new swear words.
The film opens Friday throughout Quebec.

I was told that there was an interview with a cast member who said that one of the goals of the movie is to show that unlike Ontario, Quebec actually has its own culture.
I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t know about that, but maybe you saw some signs of that. Or not.
I want to go see it! I’ve been seeing previews for it for a long time at the movie theater and am expecting a lot from it! :D
You’d think Ontario would realize that the province next to them had a somewhat different culture, but maybe everyone there is too busy looking toward Toronto. ;-)
The only thing I DIDN’T like about the Bon Cop Bad Cop premiere was the lack of popcorn. It’s the kind of summer movie you want to see on a broiling hot day in an air-conditioned theater with a tub of popcorn and some rowdy friends.
I saw a few previews for it and it looks hilarious. I’m very eager to see it!
I actually won passes to see this movie on Thursday night and I can’t wait. I would have paid to see it since the trailers look good and I like the concept but now I have an added reason to go. I’m really looking forward to it!
Just saw it in Hull. It has much to commend it, but I would have enjoyed more if it didn’t have that almost painfully loud, raucus soundtrack in places. Too, 2/3rds of the way through, the film becomes a lot darker, more serious and this detracts somewhat from the overall feel of the film. Still, it generally works well.
I apologize to your friend Alex, but I have to say I didn’t really like this movie. Here’s my review at The Culturatti if you’d like to find out why:

I LOVED this movie. Every Canadian moviegoer should see it. Support the Canadian film biz just this once.
I saw it last night and I loved it. I felt like clapping at the end. The last movie I saw in a theatre was Miami Vice and this was way better. I consider myself an educated and discerning adult and I usually avoid comedies because they never live up to my expectations. This one was better than I expected. Good acting and good film-making; especially on their small budget. And no, I’m not related to anyone who made it. I stayed to watch the credits though!
