Wearing out our fingers

Because I spend way too much time on my occasionally hot Powerbook, the tip of my fingers are gradually becoming oversensitive to pressure and heat. Now I’ll be able to blame the phone companies instead of my precious Apple.

Starting this Saturday, every telephone call will have to use 10 digit numbers instead of 7. Even call from within the island will have to add 514.

Starting in October, new numbers will come with the new 438 area code.

Makes me wonder if we’ll be able to pawn our precious 514 numbers on eBay.

When 10-digit numbers were introduced elsewhere, along with a spiffy new area code (think: Vancouver), it took some getting used to. No one wanted the new area code for their new phone lines. What ended up happening was that as more people got rid of multiple lines (home landline plus cell phone combine to just having a cell phone), the old area code (604) was again available, and only some people ended up “needing” the new area code (778). (This process was already in motion as the new “all new phones will be 778″ was introduced.)

I’m sure a similar thing will end up happening in Montreal, especially with the high turnover in phone numbers as people move each year, students leave the city, etc.
