FIFA World Cup

FIFA

Montreal is a bit far from the FIFA World Cup that started today in Germany. And there isn’t a Canadian team competing. But nonetheless it seems the football fever is also hitting our city! Bars/pubs have signs out inviting clients in to watch the World Cup. Today in the metro I saw a girl proudly wearing a Germany flag on her shoulder… Happy that her team won agains’t Costa Rica in the opening game. So… Who is everyone cheering for?

I’m leaning toward Croatia and Costa Rica since I loved travelling there so much. I also have a thing for Portugal since my daughter’s best friend is from there.

Not that I expect any of them to win ;-)

I am going for Iran this year.

I think that country needs all the positive recognition they can get, after all the crap they are taking from the west.

Now, that would really piss off the big guys in the White House.

Also, I would like to see Croatia win too. It will be good for the whole region. :D

I’m cheering for ANY team from a country that has no large community in this city- I’m sick of empty headed soccer fans rolling around, waving flags, honking their damn horns, tying up traffic and generally making asses of themselves. It might be “the beautiful game,” but the fans - with their mindless celebrations, hooliganism and unsettling habit of making monkey noises at African players - represent the lowest common denominator.

The first round is coming to an end, but chalk me up for US, France, and England. Not necessarily in that order. Unfortunately, powerhouse Japan is pretty much out of it.
