Smell

There is a strange smell in Montreal today! I noticed it this morning in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood and now in Rosemont/Petite-Patrie too! So it seems it’s not just one part of the Island. Did you smell it too? What is it?? Is that the smell of Spring??? If so, Spring stinks!!!!

i think i know what you mean; a smell of manure, right?

i noticed the same smell yesterday morning and again this morning when leaving the house, and i live in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, so as you said, it seems to be across Montreal.

When i lived in the Eastern Townships, i blamed the smell on the farmers who i thought were spreading manure in their fields in the spring, but there’s no farms in Montreal, so i’m not sure anymore what’s causing it.

Yes! It’s like that smell! Are there farming fields somewhere around/near Montreal??

    Yes this happens every year.

And the smell from pig farms can literaly knock you out, so it isn’t that. It’s just that the island has thawed out and the rivers a brewing again. Give it a few days and it’ll go away.

Actually, I think it is the farms. There are farms on the south shore, just a few miles from the river. Depending on wind direction, the smell can blow over the city, although it is faint.

In Longueuil you can smell it stronger. Last spring it was really intense there, but not so bad this year.

Blork is right, the smell of manure is carried to montreal by winds from the south where farmers in the chateaugay valley and eastern townships are prepping their fields. when the wind shifts the smell goes away.

PS Thank you Habs, nice try. Lookin forward to next season already!
