No more plastic bags at Metro and Super C?

Last August I went public with my hateful feelings toward those flimsy, polluting, grocery plastic bags. Today I was very happy to read this long article in Cyberpresse in which I learned that the Metro grocery chain will completely eliminate plastic bags within the next 18-24 months. Instead they will be selling large canvas-like blue bags that are made of recycled plastic and can be reused for more than a year.

Of course there will certainly be cheapskates that will complain about the exorbitant cost of these bag ($1 each) as well as the fact that they actually like using grocery bags in their trash cans even though most of them have holes after a single use.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!! :D I didn’t wait for Metro to change though. Every week when I go grocery shopping my bring my big green canvas bag I bought when I was in Australia at Woolworths supermarket. I love my green bag… I can carry what would fit in 6-7 plastic bags in this one green bag! Makes it easy to carry on my shoulder and not half as heavy as carrying these annoying plastic bags!

I can’t wait for the new Metro bags as it’s been 1 year and my green bag is starting to become less sturdy!!! :)

Our local IGA has been selling the canvas bags for a few months, but I think I have only seen a couple people actually using them. I think you have convinced me to get one since we alway walk to the store. Though the paper bags are very convenient for holding paper for recycling.

The canvas bags at IGAs that I have seen are not very sturdy. The ones from Coles in Australia are much better designed - they come with plastic reinforcement at the base so that if you’re carrying heavy stuff like cans and jars, the bag still keeps its somewhat boxy shape.

The plastic bags manufactured now are of such poor quality that I’ve grown the habit carrying at least one canvas bag with me in my work bag. It folds up reasonably well :)

I think the canvas bags from Metro and Super C are great. It’s about time people start thinking more about the environnement. I’ve been using plastic crates from Provigo for over a year now, but they’re awkward when all you want to get is a loaf of bread and some milk. These canvas bags are terrific, sturdy and machine washable! With two different sized straps, you can sling it on your shoulder or carry it in your hand. I keep them in the car, so whenever I stop somewhere for errands, they’re with me. Some stores even give you a credit when you use them - the Metro near me gives a 5 cent credit… not a lot you say, but in twenty visits, the bag is paid off… To me, though, the real prize is helping the environnement!

Kudos to everyone who does their bit to bring this planet of ours back up to par!!

    Good news!

i slowly adapted to the idea of using less plastic bags by putting my purchases directly in my backpack, and also not taking any bags at all if i’m close to home or to work (i often buy only one of two things, so a bag isn’t really necessary). However, i don’t have a canvas bag yet; all these comments could have convinced me to get me one of them…
