Renaud Bray

Today I went to do a bit of shopping.

I first wanted to stop by at the Renaud Bray store to get a nice pen or two… I like good pens. And now I’ve only got some with almost no more ink in them… Because of the long semester at uni! But the Renaud Bray employees were demonstrating in front of the store. This Radio-Canada article explains more about their strike. They were chanting the usual slogans like “so so so solidarit

Yes, I’d go in – retail workers organized as a union, feeling that 8.40 starting wage (almost a dolalr more than minimum wage)isn’t sufficient compensation for the incredibly taxing task of being a retail clerk? I was a retail clerk for many years myself, and c’mon, let’s be realistic, it’s an entry level low skills job. what next, every clerk getting paid like the SAQ clerks? 17 bucks an hour to run a till? Suh-weet. That’s almost as good as 20 bucks an hour to take tickets for the STCUM.

I worked at RB, and the issue isn’t just about how much money, but it’s about equal pay. The sectors that employ mainly men are paid higher starting salaries (more like 15$ an hour), while the areas that a largely filled by women start lower. The unions want the pay different to be evened out. Does anyone still think its right to cross that picket line?

Still haven’t gone to the Renaud Bray. I did find pens at my Uni’s bookstore. But now I am looking for a red wax stick for my letter “C” seal/stamp… And I only know Renaud Bray have it…! Grr…!

Bob – funny that none of the picket signs reflected that sentiment. If what you say is true, though, the problem isn’t that the sector with more women gets less pay, but that women aren’t being hired as much for the more senior sectors. Of course, the Renaud-Bray that was being picketed is closed now, so I guess the point is moot.
