Down with the ad trucks!
The first time I saw one of those big ad trucks, I simply coudn’t believe what I was seeing. Not only are they ugly and an obscene waste of ressource, they would logically proliferate where there is a lot of cars and people…making the congestion even worse. I am obviously not the only one as can be seen from the Uberculture mailing list:
“Hello!
This Monday, uberculture needs your help in a creative action against
the Ad Trucks that cruse downtown Montreal spewing pollutants and
clogging traffic with their unwanted commercial messages. The CBC will
be on hand to film the action for a series they are producing on social
activism in Canada, so come by and join us for your 15 minutes of fame!
We will be meeting Monday, August 8th @ 4:30pm in the green space at
the corner of Guy and De Maisonneuve. Bring your bike if you have one,
as well as a plain white tshirt (or a non-plain tshirt turned inside
out).
The idea is that we will find an Ad Truck on St. Catherine, bike in
front of it to slow it down, and erect a huge, blank white banner
beside the truck, so that pedestrians can no longer see the ad.
Basically, we’re jamming the ad with an anti-ad, reclaiming the space
with visual silence. So we need people who can bike en masse down St.
Catherine, some folks on foot to take turns holding the banner, and
others to distribute flyers on the destructive nature of mobile
billboards.
The action should be fun and non-confrontational, and the more of us
there are, the more effective the jam will be. Grab your friends and
your bikes, and we’ll see you Monday at 4:30! (Dammit I’m working!)
For more information on ad trucks, see the project section at uberculture.”
