Montreal Flag
Nations, states, provinces, organizations, groups of people and sometimes even company are often symbolized by their flags or logos. I realized that we’re all here talking about a great city and it has never been symbolically identified. Well, here it is.
The four symbols are a fleur-de-lys for the French, a rose for the English, a shamrock for the Irish and a thistle for the Scottish. The cross represents religion though I’ve found different interpretations from various sources. Some say, it symbolizes a military stance.

Hmmm. I LIKE this. However, most would forget about three of those symbols…
in england we have the red and white flag (as shown above) without the 4 symbols and it is ’st-george’s cross’ who was the patron saint of england. if you go to/ watch any england national team football (soccer) match you will see this flag held up by supporters throughout the stadium. not sure if it’s the same on the mtl flag. regardless i really like montreals flag. it has class.
It’s a joke, right?
Right you are J Gallagher. It is the St.George’s Cross on the Montreal Coat of Arms and Flag. Created by Jacques Viger, first mayor of Montreal (1833)and reflecting the then loyalty of the City to the Sovereign and to England… The four symbols were to represent the “four ethnic groups” the city was then made of. The motto going with it is: “Concordia Salus” - Salvation through Concord, a wish and a prayer that the four groups would live peacefully side by side for ever more… And hopefully they will!
