The metro of our dreams

Imagine a world where Montreal could have a transit system worthy of a metropolis. There is even a station within walking distance of my house (Source) and I’m only eight stations away from work. All we would need is some political courage and a few billions, nothing more.

If we put just a fraction of the highway budget into this (and fund it with a couple of cents levy on gasoline), why couldn’t we do it? I wouldn’t even mind a public/private partnership, or outright corporate sponsorship. For example, let Ikea and other companies fund a line along Cote De Liesse for the industrial park, and it also provides a convenient way for employees and shoppers to get to their store. Where possible, Toronto-style under/overground trains could also be used, as well as streetcars. A parallel “heavy freight” metro system and freight streetcars, maybe co-funded and operated by the courier companies, traditional freight operators and Canada Post, could handle moving the stuff that trucks do now…(check out http://www.carfree.com for more on that!)

Ca serait vraiment trop parfait! Enfin un vrai système de transport en commun, jusque dans l’Est , entre autre.
