The Mirror’s Popularity Contest

Howdy!

It is that time again - The Mirror is running their Best of Montreal contest. New this year is the category of “Best Blog.” It’ll be interesting to see how that one shakes out.

I can imagine that the scads of YULBloggers however, will unite and vote for Julie at La Cabane as Best Waitress, and La Cabane as Best watering hole.

I could go on and on about certain other categories, but as I have been often accused of ballot box stuffing, I will leave the rest of the ballot (be careful, it takes me about 30 minutes to fill it out) for you to choose.

I’ve always found the Mirror’s “Best Of” thing to be utterly bogus. Not only do I disaggree with many of the results (Pizza Hut as best pizza in Montreal???) but I see the whole thing as just a way to drive advertising. You can rest assured that any business that gets a “best of” rating will get a call from the Mirror’s ad people offering a special price for an ad with the “best of Montreal” tag on it.

It is a popularity contest, and while I agree with you that Amelio’s is the best pizza in Montreal. I’d also say that the difference between Amelio’s and Pizza Hut is not that large.

In their “best pricey eats” category, the past three winners have been Toqu

I disagree about the difference between Amelios and Pizza Hut not being that large, I would say that Amelios is a different style of pizza altogether (less greasy for one). I also recently discovered Napoletana and the sauce was really delicious.

Honestly for a major city Montreal has horrible pizza. Amelio’s is better then Pizza Hut sure, but it still has too chunky a sauce and horrible pepperoni (a theme in Montreal - pepperoni so bad it’s always buried under the cheese in the hopes no one notices)

Prato’s is pretty good if you want a thin crust/coal fired pizza. Il Focolaio is in the same vein, but not as good.

Napoletana is indeed decent. So is Rotisserie Italienne, and Angela

For hamburgers, try Dik Anns or La Paryse. That’s enough for me.

Les Belles Souers (Marie-Anne & Messier) has the best hamburgers. Lamb meat with fetta cheese, mushrooms, spinach, on an egg bun. Along with a beer, their fries, and ‘mayo maison’, it’s quite a meal.
