Montreal researcher faces prison for scientific misconduct

As reported last week in Science, Dr. Eric Poehlman, previously affiliated with the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington and now a professor at the University of Montreal, is the target of the most extensive case of scientific misconduct ever brought forward by the US National Institute of Health.

The falsified data had formed the basis of 10 scientific publications in the fields of menopause, aging and metabolism. All of these have since been retracted. That’s just the beginning of his troubles since these results were used in 17 federal grant applications. As a consequence, Dr. Poehlman has been barred from ever receiving US research funding and faces up to 5 years in jail and $250,000 in fines. A quick Google search shows that his research activities in Canada are were funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and the Fonds de la Recherche en Sant
